Rebrand or logo refresh: how not to confuse the two

A request for "a new logo" and a request for "a rebrand" are two different jobs with different price tags and timelines. Here is how to tell which one you actually need.

Companies often come in saying "we need a new logo," and partway through the conversation it turns out the issue isn't the logo at all — it's the positioning underneath it. That's a rebrand, not a logo refresh. The reverse happens too: someone asks for a "rebrand" when the logo has simply gone stale and just needs freshening up.

When a logo refresh is enough

  • The business's positioning and audience haven't changed — the logo just looks dated, or performs badly at small sizes, on dark backgrounds, or as an app icon.
  • Customers recognize the brand and trust it — the question is purely visual, not re-explaining who you are.
  • Competitors have pulled ahead visually, but there's no complaint about product or service quality.

When a full rebrand is actually needed

  • The positioning itself has changed — for example, moving from a budget segment to premium, or a shift in target audience.
  • The company is going through a merger, a name change, or expanding into a new direction.
  • The current identity actively works against sales: customers don't understand what the company actually does.
  • The brand looks different across channels, offices, or franchisees — there's no single consistent system.

What actually drives cost and timeline

How many touchpoints need updating (site, signage, documents, packaging, social media), whether brand guidelines and strategy already exist or need building from scratch, and whether trademark registration is required.

Where to start the conversation with an agency

Not with "design us a logo," but with the actual problem: customers don't recognize you, don't trust you, or can't tell you apart from competitors. That problem is what determines whether you need a rebrand or just a refresh.
